FACTS ABOUT ASSOCIATE DEGREE NURSING

Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) education provides an accelerated entry into registered nursing.  ADN education is continually evolving to address local community needs and current health care trends.  The graduates are prepared to practice in multiple health care arenas, including acute care, long-term care, and community settings. 

THE BENEFITS OF ASSOCIATE DEGREE NURSING – THE FOUR A’S

ACCOUNTABLE:

  1. Community colleges graduate 60% of all registered nurses and remain the country’s primary producers of the nations 2.5 million nurses.
  2. 60% of Maryland’s registered nurses graduate from AD programs
  3. AD graduates from Maryland consistently perform above the national average on the national licensure examination (NCLEX) for registered nurses. 
  4. More than 90% of graduates are employed in Maryland in a variety of health care settings and have achieved a high degree of employer satisfaction.


ACCESSIBLE:  

  1. AD programs provide access to nursing education for students from broad socio-economic strata.  Many men and minorities are enrolled in AD programs.  Women who are married, over 21 years old, and with children choose AD nursing programs.
  2. AD programs offer flexible scheduling options such as evening, weekend programs. 
  3. AD Programs offer part-time educational opportunities to meet student needs.


AFFORDABLE:

  1. AD programs are mainly publicly funded.  A tuition and fee cost of a 2 year AD nursing education in Maryland is approximately $7,000.
  2. A two-year education investment commands a starting salary range from $40,000 to $50,000 with geographic variations existing.
  3. AD graduates who continue their education may earn while they learn.  Many employers pay tuition costs for continuing education.
